Seamless intelligent services from user’s personal end devices (iPod, laptops, PBX phones, IP phones, Home phones, cell phones, Soft Phones, Video phones Voice conference, Instant messaging, Web, email, IPTV, digital Camera) to the network applications is what IPv8 is all about.
Today’s end devices and networks are assumed to be intelligent, where-by the end device can adapt to the network behavior while the networks can discover and adapt to end devices capabilities and personal policies. IPv8 enables flexible seamless services for the future network based on open platform, open architecture and open APIs.
The key to success for providing variety of services to ever changing consumers or end devices is to hide the underlying complexities of network based application services through a simple and intuitive unifying front-end application middleware services called the Unified Access Control (UAC). The UAC would provide a simple way to access and control voice, video and other services such as, IM, VoIP, streaming video, document collaboration, sensory, location based services. The UAC interface is further enhanced by personalization of set of control knobs personalizing the user views or windows to the world (Network places and services).
To achieve such tall order we have consider the use of XML which is a known for it’s platform independent protocols for exchange of data through newly innovated standardized interfaces. The intent is to provide a seamless interface between the use, data files, networks, applications and services. The invention assumptions here are that XML formatted content based on a set of standard procedure are the basis for IP-8.
It is assumed that IP-8 endpoints are session manager running on computers behind broadband connections, websites and speech recognition engines, open-source, Automatic Call Distribution devices, multimedia enabled applications and soft-clients. Rather than thinking only of a “dumb IP network” connecting all these intelligent endpoints, by contrast, IP-8 “routes” multi-media sessions and Extensible Markup Language (XML) documents to provide these endpoints a rich information base for interactive communications.
As an example, imagine a consumer needing help for a run-of-the-mill medical problem, in which ultimately a specialist consultation is required. Rather than going through the impedance of talking to a call receptionist associated with the primary care giver, being on hold, questioning which specialist is in which plan, which services are offered, what doctor qualifications and procedures exist, and wondering if ever the person will ultimately get a consultation, the consumer can use IP-8 instead. The IP-8 infrastructure can host, securely, information on medical plans, doctor qualifications and availability, health-care worker presence information and any information available generally searchable on the net relevant to medical problems.
A patient calls, via the IP-8 client (downloadable for free) to a website and interacts via text, web click, or speech recognition, to get some basic advice on a medical problem. The website captures the patient “intent” via a structured XML document. If the patient requires consultation, the click-to-dial feature is invoked, and his multimedia call is routed to a primary care giver pool of care givers, with the XML passed as call-associated data. This data is used a rich information set to provide the care giver pool information on the patient need, which is then further used to dip into private patient records at the primary care giver data center. Upon further triage, the primary care giver medical assistant decides that a referral to a specialist is needed, and the call is redirected, along with the associated, augmented XML document, to the specialist. The patient is then connected with a specialist with voice, data, and video to the specialist, and that specialist then has all the relevant patient data in real-time. This information-rich set of interactions greatly reduces the time the patient spends during the workday to obtain a basic, expert consultation, and it reduces the cost to the primary and specialist care givers.
In abstract terms, the IP-8 network determines caller “intent” and routes multimedia sessions and XML documents to appropriate endpoints based on their real-time characteristics and end devices location, mobility factors, and capabilities. The IP-8 network mediates interactions among rich information, applications and humans to reduce costs and bring greater intimacy between enterprises and their end users.
These technologies will come together because every data either personalized with appropriate indexes or simplified with advanced data mining services provided by the network applications.
Today consumers are spending over 27 billion dollars on packet media and digital file downloads. In the near future the consumers will be overloaded with the choices they have to make. The impact of “Unified Access Device in accessing media sources will be un measurable. The capability of UAD on the mobile applications will result in personalization of services where it will require integrated IP stack with XML functionalities to meet the application demands.
From technology standpoint IPv8 is the derivative of hardware speed practices in the fields of deep packet classification and meta data engines with the key differentiation that implementations of services ill be restricly based on open standards. Such mechanisms combined with cross layer optimization will give us the tools for launching applications such as listed above.
